Our Tribe | Celebrating International Women's Day

Since 2015 La Tribe has been bringing a compilation of effortlessly cool essentials to the wardrobes of women all over Australasia. Designed in New Zealand, La Tribe offers timeless styles that are bold yet eloquent, rebellious yet unassuming, all striking the perfect balance between style and substance.

A huge part of the La Tribe ethos is women supporting women. As a female-led team, working alongside creative women is what drives the inspiration behind our brand.

Our Autumn Winter 21 collection, Walk With Me embraces the importance of sisterhood and explores the joy in the women we walk through life alongside.

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2021 we found out more from our team, and the women who have helped build the La Tribe brand and what they have learned through their journey as successful women in the creative industry.

HANNAH SOUTER, CREATIVE DIRECTOR - HANNAH DESIGN STUDIO

What do you do each day to make yourself feel empowered?

I’m a big morning person, I get up and exercise every morning - whether it’s pilates, boxing or a walk to get a coffee, I find it sets the tone for my day & makes me feel like I have done something for myself before the day starts and I’ve got some fresh air. I also have a gang of girls that I often meet for a coffee or brekkie in the morning & I always feel empowered and ready for the day after meeting with them, we are each others biggest fans.

As well as working together, Team La Tribe are also very good friends. Tell us what sisterhood means to you?

Yes we are all good friends, I have known Emma since we were 20 - we are literally like sisters, we know everything that is going on in each others lives - personally & professionally. Sisterhood means having each others backs, being each others biggest cheerleaders, supporting each other through the highs and lows. I feel lucky to have walked alongside Emma since the inception of La Tribe & helped bring her vision to life and watch La Tribe grow up to where the brand is now.

In saying that, do you have any advice on working alongside your friends?

Communicate! Have fun, business is business, leave work at work & celebrate the wins!

We find great joy in getting dressed and expressing ourselves through our fashion choices. Which La Tribe pair are you coveting from the upcoming Walk With Me collection?

I’m all about the Chelsea Boots this Winter!

This year’s International Women's Day theme is Choose to Challenge, creating conversations and challenging gender bias to create change. Can you share with us some career challenges you have faced and how you have overcome them?

2020 was a huge year of adversity and change for the whole world. The most memorable challenge in my (so far) rather young career was losing my job in the midst of a global crisis. Although this was a major shock to the system, I was lucky to have a lot of support from a very creative community of women around me. I ended up in the deep end of freelancing and managed to turn a redundancy into self-employment. With one of my first regular clients being La Tribe! I think the biggest thing I learnt from this experience is just having faith in yourself, which it has been systemically engrained in us to second guess ourselves as women in the work place. This has been such a huge reminder to just back yourself 100% and use your voice.

As well as working together, Team La Tribe are also very good friends. Tell us what sisterhood means to you?

To me sisterhood means being in it together, it's a connection like no other. It's supporting your sisters through everything, and being their biggest hype team. For me, sisterhood means never doubting each other.

Exploring creativity is a key value for us at La Tribe, what does creativity look like for you?

Pushing boundaries, sharing ideas and exploring the beautiful parts of even the most simple parts of existing.

Hands down, the Platform Boot. She's casual and cool and a bit of an edge which I love. I will be pairing mine with voluminous dress for a nice bit of contrast. Keep an eye out for them, arriving soon with our beautiful AW21 collection. I've also been loving my Studded Sandals in nude for a more transeasonal option!

La Tribe is a brand built on empowering women, fostering friendships and exploring creativity. As a woman in business, what does empowerment mean to you?

I have been very lucky through my life and into my career to have been surrounded by successful and empowered women who have taught and shown me that women can be whoever and whatever they believe, alongside men. My mother advocated it, as did my father. Now, as a mother myself of a young daughter my hope is that she will live in a time where gender biases are well and truly a thing of the past, that it's not even a consideration, so that she may have the full freedom to make her own choices and live her own life as she intends to live it. That's empowerment to me.

If she met you now, what would you tell your younger self?

One of the greatest gifts of life are your friends. You're never too young to nurture your friendships, and if you do they'll become your sisters for life.

Exploring creativity is a key value for us at La Tribe, what does creativity look like for you?

Everyone is creative, it just arrives in different forms for each of us. I love working with my besties at La Tribe who are so creative in their own ways and when we bring all our differing forms of creativity together we create magic and that makes me very happy.

I can't go past a great boot so the Pistol Boot in Black Lizard is at the top of my list this winter!

HOLLIE SWEETIE, GENERAL MANAGER - LOFFT FASHION AGENCY

This year’s IWD theme is Choose to Challenge, creating conversations and challenging gender bias to create change. Can you share with us some career challenges you have faced and how you have overcome them?

I read a fascinating statistic this week that a staggering 43% of the world's female entrepreneurs have earned their fortunes via their companies pertaining to Fashion. Women in my industry are definitely celebrated and valued, however I would like to see women more supported in other male dominated industries such as property & finance. I have experienced the feeling of being underestimated when sitting in business & financial meetings with the opposite sex; however I have turned these experiences into my motivation rather than see them challenging. It just propels me to strive for success and work smarter.

As well as working together, Team La Tribe are also very good friends. Tell us what sisterhood means to you?

Women are an army of silent achievers, who are the queens of multi-tasking. We are bonded by our capacity to nurture and empathize, the La Tribe team are an extension of my family and friendship circle. We could spend hours discussing life, fashion as well as business, it is our secret language.

If she met you now, what would you tell your younger self?

I’d tell my younger self to slow down. You don’t have to know everything and remain a consistent student, always learning. Age has given me a perspective on time and its value.

GEORGIA HATZIS, FOUNDER & DIRECTOR - GGPR

La Tribe is a brand built on empowering women, fostering friendships and exploring creativity. As a woman in business, what does empowerment mean to you?

Empowerment is being true to yourself. I feel confidence in knowing GGPR is built on warm, genuine relationships and our team always remain true to these core values.

As well as working together, Team La Tribe are also very good friends. Tell us what sisterhood means to you?

Sisterhood and relationships are everything. I feel incredibly grateful to work closely with such an inspiring and talented group of women. I have learnt so many lessons from my mentors and peers over this journey. I pride myself on my loyalty; to have a close support network in both life and business is the greatest gift.

If she met you now, what would you tell your younger self?

Success through initiative is my favourite personal saying in business, I would remind her that hard work, innovation and dedication will allow her to foster relationships and grow a strong stable. I would also tell her to embrace any challenges she faces along the way as these will make her grow and become a stronger businesswoman today.

Exploring creativity is a key value for us at La Tribe, what does creativity look like for you?

GGPR allows me to explore creativity everyday with communications, strategy, event planning & showroom styling; the personal styling aspect of Fashion PR is where I personally feel most expressive. I also embrace my creativity with personal hobbies including photography & sourcing vintage interiors.

Sisterhood to me is a special relationship built on support, trust, love and admiration. I'm incredibly lucky to be surrounded with a lot of incredible woman who I rely on to help me grow personally and professionally.

If she met you now, what would you tell your younger self?

Don't worry and overthink so much! Whatever is meant to be will be. And also to always trust your gut instinct, it never lets you down.

Exploring creativity is a key value for us at La Tribe, what does creativity look like for you?

Creativity plays a big role in how I function and express myself day to day. I chose my career as a make up artist because of how creative it is. Everyday is different and exciting - and I love that!
